Parents participating one day a week at school: Each week you’ll have the opportunity to be directly involved with your child at school. With the help of our teachers and seasoned parents, you’ll be asked to plan activities on a monthly basis for specific learning areas throughout the school. For example, in November you might be in the Science Area and will need to plan an activity based on themes like fossils, rocks, and dirt or a science project of your choosing.
Attending weekly parent education meeting: As a part of the Early Childhood Education Department at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) our parents participate in a parenting class from 6:00 to 8:00 on Monday evenings. The course offers new approaches to parenting and the chance to share your experiences with others while earning college credit. One parent from each family must enroll and attend this course. Babysitting is offered on-site for a small fee as a courtesy to our families.
Monthly Tuition: TPNS costs $80 a month, per child and approximately $93/quarter to LTCC for parenting class for California residents (3 quarters per school year). Fees for non-residents can be obtained on the LTCC website.
Participate in fundraising and school maintenance: As with any not-for-profit organization the funds generated by our tuition and enrollment in Lake Tahoe Community College, are limited. As members of the cooperative, each family is asked to contribute $160 worth of fundraising dollars. These fundraising dollars are used to help pay for things like our music program, field trips, pet supplies, and much more. Throughout the year there are many opportunities for our families to earn these dollars. You may choose to participate in these fundraisers or you may simply write a check to cover your fundraising obligation. In addition to fundraising dollars, each family must also contribute to the up-keep of our school by earning 3 hours of maintenance points each year. Earning a point may be as simple as fixing a broken toy to a fresh coat of stain on the outdoor playhouse.
Serving on a committee or our Board of Directors: Our preschool relies on its families to keep things running smoothly. We ask our families to choose a committee to serve on that will require monthly duties (approximately two hours a month). From keeping the art area clean and organized (Art Committee) to planning fresh and exciting field trips for our little ones (Field Trip Committee) there are many committees to choose from. After your first year of preschool, instead of holding a committee position, you may choose to apply for a position on the Board of Directors. The board meets monthly and makes decisions on behalf of the coop.
